The breakdown

  • Straight-Back Cornrows
  • Neat Parts
  • Braid Tails

How it is done

  1. 10:00Separate a small piece at the front of the section and split it into three even pieces.
  2. 20:28Pinch and hold the left and right pieces with your thumb, index and middle fingers — grip confidently.
  3. 30:28Overhand method: bring the right side under the middle and grab the left, then rotate the top piece left and go under the middle again.
  4. 40:28After one more half-rotation, start picking up hair as you go.
  5. 50:56Slide a small amount of new hair into your index and thumb on each pass.
  6. 60:56Remember R-U-A-R: rotate, go under, add hair, repeat.
  7. 73:31Underhand method: palms face you, thumb goes under the middle, index finger presses on the scalp to keep the braid flat.
  8. 84:41Keep the grip firm but not too tight — ask the person if it is pulling.
